In Bangladesh, Migration Day generally refers to International Migrants Day, observed on December 18th each year. This day is significant for a country like Bangladesh, which has a substantial migrant workforce contributing to its economy. It is celebrated to acknowledge the contributions of migrant workers, highlight their challenges, and promote the protection of their rights. This year, the motto was “The rights of expatriates, our rights. A sovereign Bangladesh, belonging to all of us. International Migrants Day and National Expatriates Day – 2024

This year, the Expatriates’ Development Society of Bangladesh (EDSB) participated in the fair in observance of International Migrants Day. In this program, the main guest was the adviser, Asif Nazrul, of the interim government of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh. He inaugurated the main program. The day consisted of various programs, including a welcome greeting for migrant workers at Shahjalal (R.) International Airport in Dhaka, a day-long fair at the Osmani Convention Center, and a discussion program on safe migration and opportunities for migration to different European as well as others countries.

Importance in Bangladesh

  1. Economic Contribution: Remittances from Bangladeshi migrants form a significant part of the national economy. In 2022-2023, remittances constituted around 4.76% of the country’s GDP.

  2. Employment Opportunities: Millions of Bangladeshis work abroad, particularly in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Europe. These opportunities help reduce unemployment and alleviate poverty.

  3. Challenges Faced: Migrant workers often face issues like exploitation, inadequate legal protection, and unsafe working conditions. Migration Day serves as a platform to address these concerns.

  4. Government Initiatives: The Bangladeshi government observes this day by organizing events, seminars, and programs aimed at raising awareness about safe migration practices and celebrating the achievements of migrant workers.

  • Public Programs: Events are organized by the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, NGOs, and international organizations like the IOM.
  • Awareness Campaigns: Focused on safe migration, the prevention of human trafficking, and promoting the rights of migrants.
